Men Are From Mars Women Are From Venus - John Gray

Men Are from Mars, Women Are from Venus (published in May 1992) is a book by John Gray offering many suggestions for improving husband-wife relationships by understanding the communication style and emotional needs of the opposite sex.

The book, as suggested by the title, asserts the notion that men and women are as different as beings from other planets. [1] Gray adopts this metaphor as the central theme of all his books and seminars, likening men and women to the classical Greek god Mars and goddess Venus as ideal types.

In contrast to some psychologists (and feminists) who emphasize similarities between the sexes, Gray writes almost exclusively about differences. Gray briefly mentions the fact that his "Martians" and "Venusians" are only stereotypes and cannot be applied blindly to individuals.

Gray acknowledges that the "Mars-Venusian" split is merely a generalization that cannot apply to all men and women, but this is easily overlooked because the book focuses on differences. Where sex differences exist, there is often considerable overlap between the sexes. [2] [3]

An example of the theories it offers is that women complain about problems because they want their problems to be acknowledged, while men complain about problems because they are asking for solutions. Other concepts in the book are the difference between women and men's point systems and how they react under stress.

Drawing Cutting Edge Anatomy-the ultimate guide for comic book

A good understanding of anatomy is essential for any comic artist, and while this is not the most comprehensive or accurate anatomy references I've seen - the 'Ultimate Reference Guide' subtitle is not appropriate - Hart's book will be a boon to young cartoonists by making anatomy relevant to their interests. Best suited to those who already have some experience in drawing, as it assumes some understanding of drawing and representing three-dimensional form.

Pros

  • Relates anatomy directly to cartooning.
  • Several contributing artists add a variety of styles.
  • Friendly, chatty style, and more pictures than text.
  • bonus Interviews with Marvel and Dark Horse editors

Cons

  • misses some key points, such as constructing the nose
  • outline style sometimes 'flattens' forms

Ashtanga Yoga manual

This is an excellent look at Ashtanga Yoga. Swenson uses good descriptions of the asanas and the vinyasas that link them and his analogies are a creative look at Yoga: Standing Series and Finishing series as bread slices in a sandwich, with the Primary Series as the filling in the sandwich; and the idea of a vinyasa as the "etch a sketch" which clears the slate for each new asana, and his "physics of flight" and "ground transportation" as a means to jumping forward. My only wish for the book would be that it would contain a fold-out page with a diagram of the whole series on one page so that it could be a quick reference rather than having to flip from page to page. It would make moving through the series much easier after one has gotten the basics down. Also, (Ok, I have one more wish)I appreciated the break down of the Sanskrit word into meanings, but it would be even better with a pronounciation guide too. Otherwise, it is nearly perfect.
